Freitag Tower

Freitag is a Swiss brand founded in 1993 by Markus and Daniel Freitag, two graphic designers who had the idea of making a messenger bag made with truck tarpaulins, car seat belts and obsolete bicycle tubes to transport inside their projects along the city.

The result was amazing, a very resistant bags, all different, produced thanks to the recycling of discarded materials. Their bags had a rapid success and their company has enjoyed since then, a successful expansion.

In 2006 the Freitag brothers asked to Spillmann Echsle Architekten the design and construction of their shop in Zurich. For this project, the team of architects developed a construction 100% in harmony with Freitag’s spirit: a building made with seventeen recycled shipping containers.

They took them from Hamburg and they transported them to Geroldstrasse area, close to Zurich main station. They stacked all of them creating a referential view point for the neighborhood.

When we go inside we can appreciate the industrial spirit of the building on the floor, the walls and the stair that connect all the containers. All the spaces are always well illuminated with natural light which make the walk along the shop very pleasant.

The Freitag products are exposed in cardboard boxes very much in consonance with the character of the environment. Going up its eight floors we arrive at a terrace from where we have an amazing view of the city.
